Polyester Strapping

As there are many different terms for “glued polyester strapping”, confusion is often the result when trying to find the right product. Many suppliers are referring to “HM”, meaning “Hot-Melt” – hot-glue-strapping. Polyester filaments are not woven but glued together using hot glue. The standard terminology for this product is “Polyester Strapping”. Due to the many filaments which can be seen through the glue when stretching the strapping, many suppliers also call it filament-band of filament-structure-strapping. The very first strapping bands of this kind were called “WG”, standing for “Weather Guard”. What remained from that term are the letters “WG” contained in the item number. So the item number always contains the kind of strapping and also gives information as to the width and the tensile strength. A WG50, f.ex. stands for a 16 mm glued filaments strapping with a length of 850 m and 450 daN linear tensile strength. The WG55 stands for a glued 16mm polyester strapping – other than the WG 50, it is the Heavy Duty type with a linear tensile strength of 600 daN and 600 m length.

As polyester strapping offers similar values in tensile strength, it has already replaced steel strapping in some areas. With a 25mm filament-strapping (e.g. WG58), a tensile strength of up to 1000 daN can be achieved. In terms of elongation, polyester strapping nearly catches up on steel strapping, as well. Additionally, it has the advantage of lower cost as well as that it does not rust. Only the handling requires a little more effort: While steel strapping can be sealed easily via notching, a metal clamp is needed for polyester strapping. For glued filament strapping galvanized tightening buckles are necessary. Here, the threading process can be described as rather costly compared to steel strapping, especially for beginners

Besides the fact that glued polyester strapping does not rust and also is inexpensive compared to steel strapping- regarding the strapping itself as well as the strapping device, it offers an additional advantage: the tensioning can be adjusted any time. This is also a reason why this product is of great interest and very popular among the timber processing industry. During storage wood loses a lot of humidity and therefore also volume. Every other strapping band would loosen in time and could not be adjusted – polyester strapping can.
